Setting up a food hub for Derbyshire
We opened a food hub in a warehouse near Chesterfield in autumn 2015. It's operated by FareShare East Midlands and stores supermarket surplus perishable and non-perishable food such as fresh fruit and vegetables, dairy produce, meat, cans, rice, pasta and many other foods that would otherwise be thrown away.
Food banks and Super Kitchens can sign up to FareShare under partnership funding arrangements to receive an agreed amount of food.
FareShare has also been awarded a grant from Awards for All to deliver an employability programme at the hub.
Fareshare subscriptions for food banks
We offered support to help food banks, which all operate as very small enterprises, to afford the FareShare subscription fee for the first year of the Feeding Derbyshire programme giving them time to raise funds for subsequent years.
There are currently 23 food banks across Derbyshire.

We’re helping to fund breakfast clubs in schools and they’re now running in 36 schools. Offering pupils a healthy, nutritious breakfast has been shown to improve their attendance, learning attainment and behaviour.
We are funding the development of Community Kitchens in each Derbyshire borough and district.
These originated in Nottingham and use FareShare food and local volunteers to cook and provide nutritious low-cost meals for their communities. Venues can include children's centres, churches and schools and could also offer cooking skills.
They offer social eating spaces designed to offer healthy, low cost meals to local communities.
They are hosted in community venues such as children's centres, churches and schools and some also offer cooking and budgeting sessions too.

Mobile Super Kitchen food truck
The truck is stocked with FareShare supplies and travels around Derbyshire communities to provide hot, low-cost nutritious meals.
It can also be stocked with supplies from traditional food wholesalers. It is available for hire on a commercial basis for events such as music festivals and country shows where higher meal prices would be charged.
The team are working on developing online bookings and will be helping to address school holiday provisions too.

Affordable food box scheme
The affordable food box scheme uses locally produced and Fareshare food to offer a low cost home delivery scheme. It links in with ‘grow your own’ schemes and allotments to make the best use of locally sourced produce along with surplus from the private sector.

We are working with His Church, a charity which accepts counterfeit good from trading standards authorities to distribute to good causes. His Church provides pallets of these goods, including non-perishable food, toiletries and clothes, to be shared between the county’s food bank network.
School holiday provision
Seventeen projects will be running throughout the summer holidays to provide food and activities to children at risk of going hungry during the school break. It's estimated that 700 children will be provided with a healthy, free breakfast, and packed lunch and snacks. All the food is provided from the FareShare depot.
