Challenging benefit decisions and appeals

Benefits can be complex and confusing.

The leaflets on this page show how you may challenge decisions made about your benefits or Tax Credits.

Challenges to decisions usually have two stages:

  • Mandatory Reconsideration (internal reviews by DWP or Tax Credits)
  • Appeal (your case is looked at again by an independent Tribunal)

There is usually a time limit for challenging decisions. It's important to seek advice and take action as quickly as you can if you disagree with a decision.

You can get advice and support from our Helpline. Welfare Rights can represent Derbyshire residents at appeal.
