The Books on Prescription scheme is based on psychotherapy techniques and is supported by national charity the Reading Agency.
- GPs and health professionals can suggest a book which patients can borrow from the library, free of charge
- People can also look at a list of 30 titles available in Derbyshire libraries and select a book for themselves (see link attached to this page)
- If the title is not available immediately a free request can be made
You need to be a library member to borrow books from the scheme. If you’re not a member it’s quick and easy to join.
Books can help
There is evidence from the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) that self-help reading can help people with common mental health conditions as a preventative and complementary service alongside medical treatment - although it is not a substitute for visiting a GP or health professional.
Mood Boosting Books
As well as providing a good read a visit to the library could improve your mood too. You may like to try one of the mood boosting books a national promotion of uplifting novels, poetry and non-fiction.
