Picking up a book and starting to read is like going on a journey. Books can take you to unfamiliar places, explore different emotions and situations, or provide comfort and good cheer on difficult days.
Meeting other people and chatting about books can also be beneficial to your health and wellbeing. Sharing ideas and thoughts about what you have read can be both sociable and fun.

Mood Boosting Books
The Mood Boosting Books collection is a range of books aimed at giving readers a lift.
The list includes a good mix of fiction, non fiction and poetry, including humorous and reflective writing.
The titles are chosen by members of reading groups around the country, some of whom have experienced mental health or other health issues, such as cancer, themselves. Readers recommend books which they have enjoyed and found helpful in some way.
There is a list of recommendations from young people as well as one which explores the issue of dementia.
If you would like to read one of these books, you can browse the Mood Boosting Books list and then search the library catalogue or ask a member of library staff for help.
All these titles are available for you to borrow free from our libraries - look out for them in library health and wellbeing zones as well.
Mood Boosting is part of Reading Well, a national public libraries initiative supported by the Reading Agency which also promotes the self-help Books on Prescription scheme.
