Here are details of some of the Christmas events across the county offering some festive fun, family time, unique gifts, and a way to support our towns and villages as they recover from the pandemic.

Family activities


Alfreton lights switch-on including Santa's grotto and entertainment and stalls across town all day. Saturday 27 November 2021. Lights switch-on at approximately 5.30pm.


Ashbourne Christmas lights switch-on. Friday 26 November 2021 at 6.30pm.


Meet live reindeer at Bakewell's 'Christmas Sparkle' event at the Agricultural Centre, plus stalls featuring local produce, crafts and demonstrations. Sunday 28 November 2021.

Bakewell Church Christmas Tree Festival from Wednesday 10 to Friday 19 December 2021.


Rudolph's Christmas Cracker is a childre'’s show at the Strutts Centre in Belper from Monday 20 to Wednesday 22 December 2021 at 10.30am and 2pm.

Belper Christmas Festival and lights switch-on. Friday 26 November 2021 at 5.45pm in the Memorial Garden.

Open air carol service. In the Market Place on Christmas Eve.


Christmas Wonderland with an ice-skating rink, Santa's grotto, Christmas stalls, and children's rides at the Pavillion Gardens. Saturday 20 November to Sunday 5 December 2021 from 2pm to 8pm.

'The Snowman' accompanied by a live orchestra in the Pavilion Gardens on Wednesday 1 December 2021.

Aladdin - Christmas panto at Buxton Opera House. Saturday 11 December 2021 to Saturday 1 January 2022.


Chapel-en-le-Frith lights switch-on. Friday 26 November 2021.


Christmas events in Chesterfield including the elf trail that starts on Tuesday 7 December 2021 and gives you the chance to win an annual pass for Matlock Farm Park.

Beauty and the Beast panto at The Pomegranate Theatre from Friday 3 December 2021 to Sunday 2 January 2022.

Santa Special canal cruises on the Chesterfield Canal run throughout December from Tapton Lock and Hollingwood Hub. With gifts for children and seasonal refreshments for the grown-ups, £8 per person. Booking is essential tel: 01629 533020.

Crooked Spire Christmas Tree Festival at St Mary and All Saints Parish Church (Crooked Spire), Chesterfield from Thursday 18 to Sunday 28 November 2021.


Clowne lights switch-on. Saturday 20 November 2021 from 4pm.

Elvaston Castle

Wreath making workshop at Elvaston Castle. Make your own traditional wreath to take home using materials from the grounds of Elvaston. £20 per person. Booking is essential. Tel: 01629 533870. Sunday 5 December and Sunday 12 December 2021.


Glossop Winter Light Trail and lights switch-on. This runs throughout December with trail maps and family activities. The lights switch-on is on Saturday 27 November 2021.


Heanor lights switch-on and Victorian Market on Saturday 20 November 2021.


Ilkeston lights switch-on and evening entertainment on Friday 26 November 2021 from 5.30pm onwards.

Long Eaton

Long Eaton lights switch-on and evening entertainment on Thursday 25 November 2021 from 5.30pm onwards.


Matlock lights switch-on and late-night shoppingon Friday 26 November 2021.

Shipley Country Park

Elf trail at Shipley Country Park. Follow the self-led elf trail. Clue cards help you complete the elf's activity sheet and then you can claim your certificate from the visitor centre. From Sunday 19 December 2021 to Sunday 9 January 2022. Cost £1.50 per child. Turn up any time.


There will be a series of Christmas-themed events in Swadlincote town centre, including a free trail for all the family. Why not see if you can spot sculptures of the Snowman and Snowdog from Raymond Briggs’ popular Christmas book. From Saturday 20 November 2021 to Sunday 16 January 2022.


Christmas theatrical steam train rides with Santa on board. Leaving from Wirksworth to 'Santa's Station' and back. Various dates throughout December. Early booking is advised.

Craft, artisan and food fairs, plus other special events and late-night shopping.

Marketing Peak District and Derbyshire online Christmas Fair to help support local businesses impacted by COVID-19. Virtual stalls include jewellery, art, ceramics and glass, local food and drink, homeware, landscape calendars and prints, plus pet-friendly gifts.
