This is ancient oak woodland; a beautiful place to enjoy a quiet walk and look for wildlife.
How to find us
You will find Shaw Wood in the village of Oakerthorpe, between Alfreton and South Wingfield (Ordnance Survey grid ref SK389 551). Walk into the wood on the public footpath between the nursing home and the pub on the B6031. Alternatively, walk from South Wingfield on the public footpath across the River Amber from Church Lane.
There is no public parking for Shaw Wood.
What makes Shaw Wood special?
Shaw Wood is registered as a Local Wildlife site, which means it is a good habitat for a variety of creatures and a great place for us to enjoy them. In the spring the woodland floor is a carpet of bluebells and other wildflowers, which in turn attract insects, birds and small mammals. Take a minute to stop and listen, how many different bird songs can you hear?
Our rangers are managing the woods to improve the habitats. This means in the winter we are felling trees in some areas and planting different species in other places.
Use the series of public and concessionary footpaths that cross the site to help you explore this wonderful woodland.
