Frith Wood

A path in Frith Wood

Frith Wood is a wildlife haven where you can enjoy wandering woodland paths, through the meadow and around the pond.

How to find us?

Frith Wood is on the edge of Dronfield.  It is easy to walk into the wood from Dronfield either off Callywhite Lane or Firthwood Road. By car, take the turn to Callywhite Lane at the junction of the B6057 and B6158.

Parking

There is a small, unsurfaced car park off Callywhite Lane, Ordnance Survey grid ref SK365 783, or on-street parking in the same area.

What might you see?

This is an area of mixed woodland and many of the plants and animal species are typical of ancient woodland. The best time to visit is in the spring when the woodland floor is a carpet of bluebells and other wildflowers.

You will see evidence of ancient coppicing. This is where trees were cut and used in the production of charcoal for the early iron and steel industries. Countryside Service rangers have reintroduced the practice to help improve the woodland for wildlife. Listen and see how many different bird songs you can hear.

The pond was formed when clay was extracted for the local brick works in the 19th century. Now it is home to frogs and newts and is alive with tadpoles in the spring.

You can join the Unstone, Frith Wood and Summerley self-guided walk from here. Download the leaflet from the waymarked walks web page.
