Peter Fidler Reserve
The Peter Fidler Reserve is great to visit for a peaceful walk and an ideal place to see an amazing variety of wildlife.
The reserve is at the northern end of the Stockley Trail and you can enjoy walking, cycling or horse riding to Stockley Ponds and Doe Lea Nature Reserve.
How to find us
You will find the reserve off the A632, nestling at the bottom of the hill below Bolsover Castle.
The reserve car park is on Riverside Way, Bolsover. Sat Nav S44 6GA. There is designated horse box parking which is included in our Horse Box parking scheme - you will need a permit and key, contact Tapton Lock Visitor Centre for details tel: 01629 533020.
What makes the Peter Fidler Reserve special?
The site has been dedicated to the memory of Peter Fidler who was born in 1769 at Mill Farm, next to the former colliery site. Peter Fidler was a famous North American explorer and chief surveyor of the Hudson Bay Company in Canada. A commemorative stone cairn on the reserve is similar to his memorial at Dauphin in Canada.
What you might see
There are great views from the top of the reserve up to Bolsover Castle and over to Sutton Scarsdale Hall.
Look for the many species of dragon and damselflies found here in the summer months. Visit the viewing platform and look out over the reed bed. You can spot reed bunting all year round. In the spring and summer look out for reed and sedge warblers that have flown all the way from Africa to breed here.
From the reserve you can also enjoy a visit to the adjoining Carr Vale Flash a Derbyshire Wildlife Trust (opens in a new window) wetland reserve that is ranked among the top five sites in Derbyshire for birdwatching.
The reserve is at one end of the Stockley Trail. At the other end of this 2.5 mile trail you'll find the Glapwell Countryside Site. Here, we've recently opened a new mountain bike trail. The track is a blue grade mountain bike trail and is suitable for anyone with basic off-road riding skills. We think you'll find it adds some fun and adventure to your ride.
