Old English Garden

Elvaston Old English Garden spring

The Old English Garden is a hidden gem within the grounds of the country park and is really worth a visit. If you're looking for a tranquil setting to sit and rest or enjoy wandering through gardens with herbaceous beds, shrub borders and pleasant lawns, then the Old English Garden awaits you!

This walled garden, although not large, was originally an area for plants under glass within which fruit, vegetables and exotic plants were grown for the Stanhope family. Redesigned in the 1970s, it's now a quiet corner of the park where you can escape from the hustle and bustle, even on the busiest of days.

A small corner of the Old English Garden is raised and was once dedicated to growing herbs. In 2011 it became a community project to redesign the area as a sensory garden and improve access, with an emphasis on the sight impaired.

Call us on tel: 01629 533 870 or drop in to the ranger's office (off the cobbled courtyard) if you'd like to know more about this project and find out how you could get involved.

Opening times (free entry)

Between 9am and 4pm daily

Discretion is used in periods of poor weather regarding opening and closing, as some surfaces can become slippery and hazardous.

The walled garden is available for limited hire privately and in 2017 was licensed for wedding ceremonies. Please note the gardens will be closed during these periods and we would advise contacting the park office well in advance of any visit to check accessibility. Where possible notices will be affixed to the entrance gate to forewarn regular visitors.
