Art Collection

Buxton Museum and Art Gallery has an eclectic art collection, its main strength being depictions of Derbyshire from the eighteenth century to the present day. Every year the museum purchases work exhibited in the Derbyshire Open Art Competition.

The museum has benefited from two major bequests, the Gommersel Collection of Victorian paintings, mainly watercolours, and the Funduklian Bequest which consists of twentieth-century art including work by Duncan Grant, Augustus John and Theodore Major.

The museum's eighteenth and early nineteenth-century works were strengthened by Enlightenment! (opens in a new window), a Heritage Lottery funded 'Collecting Cultures' project. Through the project (2009-2013) the museum purchased work by William Marlow, John Webber and William Day as well as watercolours by lesser known artists and prints. Alongside the HLF, acquisitions have been supported by the Art Fund, V&A Purchase Grant Fund, Beecroft Bequest and the Bingham Trust.
