Buxton waters

Created as part of the Collections in the Landscape project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Before Buxton was Buxton, the Romans called it Aquae Arnemetiae, meaning 'the spa town of the sacred groves'. Roman soldiers, Mary Queen of Scots, Manchester United footballers, the rich and famous, the infirm - all lured by the healing spring waters.

Take a short tour to find out more about the ways in which our natural spring waters shaped the town.
