Blue plaque in honour of Sir Nigel Gresley
1876 − 1941
Born in Edinburgh but raised in Netherseal, the son of the village Rector, Nigel Gresley, became one of Britain's most famous steam locomotive engineers. He designed the Mallard, the steam train which still holds the world speed record of 126 mph, and the Flying Scotsman. His engines were considered elegant, both aesthetically and mechanically. He is buried in the family plot at Netherseal.
