Cromford Canal

One of the most successful canals in Britain it was very important in linking rural Cromford with the industrialised east Derbyshire of coal and iron thus playing a pivotal role in the industrialisation of Derbyshire and the Derwent Valley. Closed in 1944 but reinvigorated in the 1970s. Part of the canal is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest. An 800+ strong organisation exists to promote its use and restoration.
