George Herbert Strutt
1854 – 1928
The last of the great Strutt benefactors who transformed Belper from a small village of nail-makers in to a major industrial centre with every possible facility provided for the workers - the world's first mill town. The Strutts were key players in the creation of the factory system which transformed the world we live in and ushered in the Modern Industrial Age. Thanks in part to their innovations and ingenuity the Derwent Valley Mills are now celebrated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
