1888 – 1940
A self-made man who donated large amounts of money earned through his Sheffield razor blade manufacturing business to his adopted village of Hathersage. Funded numerous sports and community facilities. Served on many local committees. His philanthropy extended to Sheffield and to certain towns in Northern France and Belgium after World War I. Tragically he was killed in the first big blitz on Sheffield in 1940 along with some of his workers, whom he went into the city to help that night.
Nominated by Brian Ward of Hathersage
