Opportunities for 14-19

Julie Fletcher

Younger learner seizing the opportunity for learning and work.

Julie Fletcher came to us in September as a shy learner who did not believe in herself or her own ability. Now her confidence has had a massive boost and her enthusiasm for learning knows no bounds.

Julie joined our 14-19 pre-apprenticeship study programme in September 2016. She has been undertaking an intense programme of learning which not only includes core skills of maths, English and ICT but a NVQ level 1 in Customer Service and Skills for Employment and Further Learning (SEFL) qualification.

Due to illness, in her last two years of school Julie had only attended for approximately six months. This had a huge impact on her confidence and her personal and skills development. Julie therefore joined the course with the aim of catching up what she had missed at school and to be accepted as one of the group.

From the beginning Julie had a quiet, steely determination to try everything. She has already achieved Entry 3 in English, first aid at work and food hygiene. Our study programme learners also complete a number of work experience hours to gain invaluable work skills, including working in the onsite café or through external employment opportunities. Julie has taken on both.

Programme Development Worker, Katherine Allan says:

"Julie is making fantastic progress on her customer service NVQ and locally the Learner's Lunchbox café has been nicknamed "Julie's café" as she works so well and is so efficient in there."

Julie has also thrived in her work experience at Gamesley Primary school and they are so pleased with her that they have asked if she would be willing to help out more than her original commitment of one day a week. The feedback from Gamesley Primary has been great. Charlotte Hathaway says:

"Julie has a lovely manner with the children.  She has grown loads in confidence, and is working with the children more successfully including taking on some responsibility for behaviour management. She is always punctual and professional, and we really enjoy having her work in the school."

Julie says:

"The course has given me more confidence than I had before and I am enjoying it because I am getting more qualifications. I am also getting to know more people whilst working in the café. I now work one to one working with the children at Gamesley School and love it there"

Tutor Lesley Hand says:

"Julie is the ideal learner, enthusiastic, polite, and dedicated to achieving and a pleasure to teach."

Julie is well on track to achieve all her goals this year and hopes to go on to study childcare with us from September 2017.
