From unemployment into a rewarding career

Mike Ross

Mike Ross, 25, from Simmondley has secured himself a permanent job and bright future in digital technology with the help of our apprenticeship programme.

A talented mathematician, Mike had been unemployed for some time and teaching himself web development in the hope of finding a job. Having arrived at Fig Creative, a design and marketing agency based in the High Peak, under the local job centre's 'Back to Work' initiative, he was then successful in securing an apprenticeship with the organisation.

Fig's Managing Director, Helen Duncan said,

"I liked Mike's work ethic and it soon became clear his ability to solve technical problems could make a real contribution to our business and our clients. An apprenticeship made sense because it benefitted him and us."

Fig provided the time, support, resources and training needed for Mike to meet the learning requirements of his apprenticeship and in return he's put his technical ability - including JavaScript programming expertise - to maximum use, building WordPress websites and developing apps for Fig's clients. He's also created a social hub grid for Fig's own website and designed a tool that structures and streamlines the data used by its sales team.

Mike has now successfully completed his apprenticeship and Helen was delighted to offer him a paid contract within the organisation. Helen said,

"Mike has worked hard to prove himself within our digital team. He's bright, he works hard, and he's a quick learner − all skills we need to move our business forward."

Mike said:

"Doing an apprenticeship has got me back into the workplace and I really needed that… I've been able to develop my skills and interests and get my confidence back."
