Pathways to learning and employability for 14 to 19 year olds

We offer a range of programmes tailored for learners aged 14 to 19. We can help you to build your confidence and gain real skills for work or to help you with further study.

14 to 19 full-time pre-apprenticeship study support programme

Available in Chesterfield, Shirebrook, Cotmanhay, Alfreton , Clay Cross, Long Eaton, and Derbyshire Eco Centre and Glossop. The programme provides young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET) or at risk of becoming NEET, children in care and care leavers with confidence building, personal development and employability skills. The programme includes English, maths and ICT skills and a chance to attend a supportive work placement and gain appropriate work-related qualifications in areas such as:

  • sports studies
  • art and design
  • hospitality
  • horticulture
  • childcare.

The course lasts for one year or two years and is for three days per week.

14 to 19 part-time study programmes in our adult community education centres

A personal programme for each learner, for as many hours as is suitable for you each week, for a few weeks or over a full year. You can work towards GCSE or functional skills (entry level to level two) in English, maths and ICT as needed, and gain a work-related qualification. Learners can also study creative, language and wellbeing courses with their other subjects. Learning is normally in groups with mostly adult learners. There are enrichment activities planned for small groups of young people. Most learners on this programme are those who need an alternative curriculum or environment to the one offered in schools. Learners also include: 

  • children in care
  • care leavers
  • electively home educated learners aged 14 to 16
  • 16 to 19 year-olds not in education, employment or training (NEET).

The programme allows learners to develop their employability skills, life skills and confidence. It also develops and promotes the benefits and value of all learning on physical and mental wellbeing. Learners are encouraged to progress onto further learning, volunteering and employment.

16 to 19 traineeship programme

Designed for young people who want to get into employment or onto an apprenticeship programme. This programmed, which is for up to six months includes:

  • a substantial work placement of at least 100 hours
  • personal and employability skills
  • maths, ICT and English
  • the chance to gain appropriate work-related qualifications.

16 to 19 apprenticeship programme 

A 12 to 24 month programme giving young people the opportunity to gain paid work place experience in a variety of subjects including:

  • childcare
  • business administration
  • customer service
  • hospitality and catering. 

The young person will also gain a work-related qualification at level two or three and English, maths and ICT at the appropriate level.
