Another chance for maths success

Despite experiencing some traumatic personal issues as he was sitting his GCSEs at school, Elliott achieved some satisfactory results but not all were as good as he had hoped. Elliott did not achieve a grade C GCSE in Maths, which would enable him to move on to his ambitions for the next stage of education or employment, and he was worried about what he could do next.

In 2014 Elliott (then aged 18) was very despondent and didn’t know what to do for a career. He thought he had "missed the boat", which made him lose confidence in his abilities and worry about his future.

He was therefore very interested when he heard about the Derbyshire County Council’s Adult Community Education Maths GCSE course at the Ritz Adult Education Centre, Matlock. He joined the course a little after the start but, with the support of his course tutor, Andre Smith, and the small and friendly class he was soon able to catch up with the work.

Elliott enjoyed working with his classmates, who were all taking the course for similar reasons, and reports that he found it socially enjoyable as well as enabling him to work towards the qualification he wanted. He became very enthusiastic about the subject and spent many hours each week exploring the subject by doing course work at home and, as the exam days neared, doing a number of practice test papers.

Elliott says "The course has really changed my outlook and made me realise what opportunities are open to me". Not only has he worked hard over the last few months he's regained his self-confidence and has plans for future education.

On 20 August 2015 Elliott went to the Ritz Centre to collect his results and was delighted to find he had achieved the required grade to enable him to progress onto the next stage of his education. He was especially thrilled when he found he had achieved the equivalent of 90.2% in his exam marks!

He is soon to enrol on the BTEC Level 3 in Business Studies course at Chesterfield College, following which he plans to go to university to study Economics and Finance. He’s even already chosen a couple of preferred universities!

Elliott says that wherever he does go from here, he wouldn't have reached this stage without having taken the opportunity to study his Maths GCSE through the County Council's Adult Education Service. Elliott is particularly appreciative of the support of the tutor, Andre, in helping him achieve his goal.
