Help with your learning

We understand that some learners have additional needs and require extra support to help them undertake their course of study.

We are working towards learning which involves everyone and which gives everyone the opportunity to achieve to their full potential.

We will always work to meet the specific needs of each learner. The learner, course tutor and programme development manager will work together to arrange the required support.

Bring a friend

We encourage learners who are hesitant about taking a class to bring a friend, companion or partner with them for support or to study with them.

We offer discounts for those helping learners in this way and your local centre can tell you more.

A few study tips

Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your learning:

  • keep a file for any handouts you get from your tutor and for your own notes - you may find it helpful to have sub-dividers to organise your notes into separate topics
  • highlighters and coloured pens can help you organise and memorise your notes - we remember things better if they stand out in different colours
  • revise small amounts on a regular basis - it's more effective to study in small chunks
  • take breaks when you study - research shows that we are more likely to remember things we cover at the beginning and end of a session - taking breaks means that you have more beginnings and more ends

Online resources

We offer a range of online learning resources from our virtual learning environment for our adult community education service - Derbyshire Learning Online.

We are increasing the number of our courses that include the opportunity to do some learning online and in your own time.

If you would like to have access to Derbyshire Learning Online, please ask your tutor. If you are unable to access the internet from home, speak with our centre staff who will help you with other ways you can access, including signposting you to free internet access at local libraries.

Library service

The library service is a valuable resource for you and has a large collection of resources to support your learning. Professional staff are available to offer support and advice. They can give you better idea of the resources they can offer.

Libraries can be an alternative, safe and neutral space to study. You can find details about your nearest library.
