Derbyshire Adult Community Education Service offers courses for those setting off on their career in the childcare profession, as well as those who are already working or volunteering wanting to develop and improve their job prospects.

For the these courses, no formal qualifications are needed and you will be assessed through evidence you collect in tasks and assignments.
Developing skills for listening to children
A 10-week, part-time entry level introductory course, aimed at developing your skills for communicating with children. It is suitable for parents / carers supporting their children and people working with children.
BTEC Award in Health, Social Care and Working with Children
A 12-week, part-time course if you are thinking about a career in social care, health or working with children. This level 1 qualification course includes practical craft activities and gives an insight to job roles within the sector.
For the following courses, you will be expected to spend a minimum of five hours a week within an appropriate school or childcare setting. You will need a current DBS Check to start any of these courses. A certificate is a full level 2 qualification, and a diploma is a full level 3 qualification.
Certificate for Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
If you have experience working or volunteering in a school and you would like to work as a teaching assistant, supporting children from age 5 with their learning in the classroom, this professional qualification is for you. This qualification is delivered part time over 28 weeks.
Certificate for the Children and Young People's Workforce
If you already have experience working or volunteering in a childcare setting, and would like to work with children and young people in pre-schools, schools, nurseries, playgroups, crèches, after school clubs and other young people's organisations, this professional qualification is for you. This qualification is delivered part time over 30 weeks.
Diploma in Children's Learning and Development Early Years Educator (EYE)
This will prepare you with knowledge and understanding to become an Early Years Educator (EYE). This will enable you to work with children from birth to five in the early years foundation stage and to gain an understanding of child development from five to seven years. This qualification is delivered part time over 72 weeks. You will need GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above to start this course.
Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching & Learning in Schools
This course will give you an in-depth knowledge of the role of the school support practitioner, including supporting a learning activity, and how this aids the development of children and young people. This qualification is delivered part time over 60 weeks.
