Work starts on Woodville to Swadlincote regeneration route

Published: 3 November 2020

Work to build a new road linking Woodville and Swadlincote has started paving the way for regeneration in South Derbyshire.

The £13.4 million project has been designed to unlock land for redevelopment along the route opening up opportunities for new housing and business development.

Measuring almost a mile in length, the single-carriageway road will also ease congestion on existing roads in the area, particularly Clock Island in Woodville where the A511 joins the A514.

Our Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Infrastructure Councillor Simon Spencer said:

“As well as easing congestion around Clock Island and making the junction safer, the new road will provide the key to unlocking land to bring major redevelopment to the south of the county.

“The route offers huge potential to attract housebuilders and business development, bringing more jobs to the area and providing a much-needed economic boost.”

The road, which is expected to be complete by Autumn 2021, is being funded jointly by us with a £7 million contribution and D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership which has earmarked £6.4 million from its Local Growth Fund.

Nottinghamshire construction firm NMCN Ltd has been appointed to carry out work to build the road.

Initial work will start off Occupation Lane, Woodville, to build the road from the roundabout along with work to widen Kiln Way ready for the connection to Occupation Lane.

Two commercial units at the end of the Woodhouse Business Centre will also be demolished during the early stages to make way for the development.

Traffic disruption will be kept to a minimum but temporary traffic lights will be needed on Kiln Way and Woodhouse Street at times during the early part of the development and later when connections to the A514 Derby Road/Swadlincote Road are made.
