Killamarsh Library opens in refurbished £1.9 million leisure centre

Published: 26 October 2022

Killamarsh Library has reopened in its new home at the town’s newly refurbished sports centre.

Our library has moved from its former site on Sheffield Road to the North East Derbyshire District Council-run Killamarsh Active (previously Killamarsh Sports Centre) on Stanley Street which has undergone a £1.9 million refurbishment.

Killamarsh Active opened at the beginning of October 2022 and since then final work to get the library ready has been going on.

The first library visitors went through the doors on Wednesday (26 October 2022) to use the new facilities.

The library closed its doors in May so that preparations could be made for the old building to be demolished and a more welcoming and secure site created for the Parish Suite and skatepark as well as extra parking for Killamarsh Active.

The new library is on the ground floor of Killamarsh Active near the new café area.

Benefits to the library move include portable book racks which can be moved out into the café area during the library’s opening hours, creating a more relaxed setting where people can browse books and get a drink and snack or meet with friends, putting it at the heart of the new facility. And the fact the facilities are all under one roof means it is more cost effective and environmentally friendly due to shared heating and lighting.

All library services including computers for customers to use and the book ordering service remain the same.

It is hoped that the library’s new surroundings will appeal to existing customers due to the new, bright and modern facilities, and also open up the library to new customers who may drop in to find out more while using the sports centre.

Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Leadership, Culture, Tourism and Climate Change Councillor Barry Lewis said:

“This is a really exciting move for our Killamarsh library and everyone is confident that library users will be really pleased with the new surroundings.

“The new space is fresh and modern, and the area definitely lends itself to a more relaxed and sociable experience.

“This is a great example of partnership working and will be a real benefit to the local community who will be able to enjoy all the new facilities in one place.”

Leader of North East Derbyshire District Council Councillor Alex Dale said:

“We’re delighted to have the library inside Killamarsh Active and its presence adds to the many benefits on offer at the new centre which the community can enjoy and make use of.

“Killamarsh Active will attract people of all ages and interests from the local community and further afield and is a very positive asset to the area as a whole.”

Killamarsh Library’s opening hours are:

  • Monday from 1.30pm to 5pm
  • Wednesday from 10am to 12.30pm, and from 1.30pm to 7pm
  • Thursday from 2pm to 5pm
