What this consultation is about
We would like your views on the proposal by Stoney Middleton CE Primary School to provide maintained nursery education at the school. Maintained nursery settings are based on school sites. They are open during term-time only.
Background
The governing body of Stoney Middleton CE Primary School is aware of the lack of any pre-school availability in the village. Many families seek pre-schools in neighbouring communities and then opt to remain in these locations when applying for school places. However, many families in our area have commented on the lack of nursery at Stoney Middleton and have expressed a desire to see provision here.
The proposal
To change the age range of Stoney Middleton CE Primary School from five to 11 to three to 11 years old from 1 September 2017.
A change in age range would enable the school to provide early education to children aged three and four years. Initially, the school plans to secure up to six morning and afternoon nursery places offering the 15 hours early education entitlement. Those who wish to purchase additional hours on top of their child’s funded provision will be able to, should there be space available. It is proposed that these sessions will be from 9am to noon and noon to 3pm, Monday to Friday, during term time.
Objectives of the proposal
To offer improved transition for children and families into the reception class, and impact positively on future achievement.
To extend and improve early years facilities to make Stoney Middleton CE Primary School increasingly attractive to local families. Nursery aged children will be taught in the same classroom as reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children with access to enhanced provision meeting their needs.
Admissions to the nursery
Parents will need to apply for a place in the nursery in advance. These will be offered on a termly basis. If Stoney Middleton CE Primary School is oversubscribed, priority will be given in line with the local authority’s over subscription criteria.
There is no guaranteed link between the nursery and reception intake, and attendance at nursery will not give a higher priority for admission into reception.
