Chairman of the council

Councillor George Wharmby took over the role of Chairman of the council in April 2018.

Chairman-George-WharmbyIt is the second time Councillor Wharmby has been Chairman of the council, having previously held the role from 2011 to 2013.

As Chairman, Councillor Wharmby takes on the official chain of office and presides over council meetings, which take place at Matlock in the council chamber at County Hall on Smedley Street six times a year.

In addition to ensuring the smooth running of council meetings, the Chairman is an ambassador and figurehead for the county council across the whole of Derbyshire. The ambassador role extends the length and breadth of Derbyshire with the exception of the city of Derby which, as a unitary authority, is responsible for all its own local government functions.
