Artist Exchange Programme - May to July 2008. Yuhi Watanabe, a Shamisen musician from Toyota, visited schools in Derbyshire to deliver workshops and talks on Japanese culture to embed a global dimension into the school curriculum.
Artist Exchange Programme - September to November 2008. Debbie Hedderwick, a Derbyshire musician and dance teacher, completed the reciprocal part of the project with a 3-month visit to Toyota City to deliver workshops in schools and create a collaborative performance piece with local communities.
Toyota City Junior Orchestra visited Derbyshire from 21 to 28 July 2008. The orchestra consisted of 43 members, who performed at various locations around the county including the Assembly Rooms, Pavilion Gardens and County Hall. Mrs Akiko Toyoda of the Toyota family led the group.
Annual School Exchange - September 2008 - 26 students from Derbyshire and Japan took part in the annual schools exchange.
Derbyshire Youth Chorale visited Toyota from 26 October to 3 November 2008 to perform at various locations in the region.
The Decennial Twinning Ceremony at Toyota City Hall and Kuragaike Park was held on 1 November 2008, to celebrate the twinning link. The Derbyshire civic delegation attended the event.
Japanese Cultural Festival was held in Derby City on 16 November 2008, to celebrate the twinning link.
Cultural activities on offer to the public included: origami, ikebana, traditional Japanese music and dance performances, traditional dress and food and drink.
The Toyota City Cultural Promotion Foundation sent a delegation of 39 cultural practitioners to Derbyshire to perform around the county. The delegation included dancers, and flower arranging Ikebana masters.
We hosted the official Decennial Twinning Ceremony at County Hall in Matlock on 17 November 2008.
The Japan Local Government Centre chose to host their 2008 Japan Day Seminar at County Hall in Matlock on 18 November 2008. Senior representatives of both countries spoke at the event, including the Mayor of Toyota City. The event was titled ‘Sustaining Regeneration through Partnerships in the Changing Economic Climate’.
