The Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) is a high quality pension scheme open to the vast majority of local government employees in England and Wales except teachers, firefighters and police officers.

The scheme is also open to non teaching staff of further Education Colleges and the University of Derby.

To be eligible to join the LGPS in Derbyshire you must be employed by a relevant employer within the Derbyshire Fund and be contracted to work for three months or more.

The LGPS is a final salary pension scheme open to new members. Retirement benefits are calculated on 1/60th accrual from 1 April 2008.

There is no automatic lump sum but there is an option to convert pension to lump sum.

Every £1 pension converted provides £12 additional lump sum.

Normal pension age is 65 although benefits can be paid from age 60 but they may be reduced.

A simple example of an annual pension calculation for a member starting since the 1/60th service accrual from 1 April 2008 is as follows:

A full time worker started in the Local Government Pension Scheme on 1 April 2008 and works for 10 years who retires at age 65 with final pensionable pay of £20,000.

1/60 x 10 x 20,000 = Annual pension of £ 3,333.33

Use the pensions option form in the related documents section to join the scheme or Call Derbyshire on 08 456 058 058 and ask for a form to join the pension scheme.
