Protecting the fund against fraud
Government finance watchdog - the Audit Commission - has exposed millions of pounds pension fraud nationally.
Derbyshire - along with other local authorities - has to supply information on its pensioners which is then matched against the Department for Work and Pension (DWP) records.
This process is part of the 'National Fraud Initiative' and can identify pensions that are being paid to people who have died, and pensioners who are again working in local government.
Survivor pensions
The Local Government Pension Scheme provides survivor pensions to widows, widowers, registered civil partners and from 1 April 2008 nominated co-habiting partners (providing certain qualifying conditions apply).
Please ensure that your next of kin is aware that you are in receipt of a local government pension and that they should notify us in the event of your death.
Tax rules affecting pensions
If you have another pension (other than your State Retirement Pension) which has not yet been brought into payment, when it becomes due your pension provider will ask for details of your local government pension.
This is to ensure that the Life Time Allowance (LTA) (i.e. the total value of pension benefits you may have without incurring a tax charge) is not exceeded.
For the 2012/13 tax year, the LTA has been set at £1.5 million.
