Pay Days for Pensioners 2008/09
We all look forward to pay day - here are the dates each month when your Local Government pensions in Derbyshire will be paid:

2008
Friday 28 November
Wednesday 31 December

2009
Friday 30 January
Friday 27 February
Tuesday 31 March
Thursday 30 April

You will receive a payslip in March, April and May each year. For the rest of the year you will only get one if you change your address or if your net payment varies by two per cent or more from your previous month's payment.

Pensions Increase
Your pension keeps it's value because each April its increased in line with inflation - based on the change in the Retail Price Index for the year up to the previous September.

This year's increase from April 7 was 3.9 per cent - for those of you who retired before 25 April last year. Your increase will have been lower if you retired after then depending on when you retired.

You normally qualify for an increase to your pension each April following your retirement - provided you retired after age 55 or on grounds of permanent ill health.

If you didn't, you will receive a single "catching up" increase on your 55th birthday to take account of inflation from your retirement date. After that, you will qualify for increases in the normal way.

Widows', widowers' and children's pensions are also increase each April.

Remember to tell us in writing if you:

  • Change your address or the bank or building society account your pension is paid into - either ring Call Derbyshire on 08 456 058 058 and ask for a form or click below for a Change of Address Form or Change of Bank Details Form;

  • Work again in a job covered by the Local Government Scheme - either ring Call Derbyshire on 08 456 058 058 and ask for a form or click below for a Re-employment Form

Protecting the fund against fraud

Government finance watchdog - the Audit Commission - has exposed millions of pounds pension fraud nationally.

Derbyshire - along with other local authorities - has to supply information on it's pensioners which is then matched against the Department for Work and Pension (DWP) records. This process is part of the 'National Fraud Iniative' and can identify pensions that are being paid to people who have died, and pensioners who are again working in local goverment.

Survivor pensions

The Local Government Pension Scheme provides survivor pensions to widows, widowers, registered civil partners and from 1 April 2008 nominated co-habiting partners (providing certain qualifying conditions apply).

Please ensure that your next of kin is aware that you are in receipt of a local government pension and that they should notify the County Council in the event of your death.

Tax rules affecting pensions

If you have another pension (other than your State Retirement Pension) which has not yet been brought into payment, when it becomes due your pension provider will ask for details of your local government pension.

This is to ensure that the Life Time Allowance (LTA) (ie the total value of pension benefits you may have without incurring a tax charge) is not exceeded. For the 2008/09 tax year, the LTA has been set at £1.6 million.
