Chesterfield East West cycle route – consultation on 3 specific parts of the route

Status: Results available

Opens: 30 June 2022 - Closes: 5 August 2022

What this consultation is about

We are building a new walking and cycling route in Chesterfield, which completes the link across town from east to west.

Money from the government has been awarded for this scheme and work will start in the coming months.

We have already consulted on the route proposals, but now need to carry out 3 pieces of specific statutory consultation so that we can consider:

  • permanently closing Crow Lane to all vehicles except motorcyclists
  • making a longer section of Chatsworth Road 30mph
  • creating a dedicated cycle lane so that we can take action to stop cars using this or parking on it

It is worth noting that anyone objecting to any of these 3 proposals is required under The Local Authorities' Traffic Orders (Procedure) (England and Wales) Regulations 1996 to give reasons for their objection. It is also helpful if alternatives for officers to consider are suggested.

Please give us your opinion on the proposals by completing the online questionnaire.

This questionnaire is available in other formats. If you would like it in a different format or have any questions or comments on the survey form please contact us.

Results

After collating, examining and processing the results they were presented to the Cabinet Member for Highways Assets and Transport for consideration.

Councillor Athwal decided to close Crow Lane permanently to vehicles, to build a cycle lane on Chatsworth Road, and extend the current 30mph limit on Chatsworth Road / Baslow Road.

We looked carefully at what people told us in the consultation and considered the alternatives suggested.

Creating this route across Chesterfield will give many more people the opportunity to get out of their cars, and either walk or cycle to get into town, or up to the hospital.

In total 1,240 people responded to the consultation. For the Crow Lane closure, 752 people supported this with 416 people objecting, 980 people supported the 30mph extension on Chatsworth Road, with 178 objections. For the cycle lane on Chatsworth Road 741 people supported this, with 430 objecting.

The council also received 2 petitions, one supporting the closure of Crow Lane, with 522 signatures, and one against the closure with 744 signatures.

In total, adding together the results of the consultation and the results of the petition, there were more people wanting Crow Lane to close permanently than not.

Work starts on some sections of the route in autumn 2022. Crow Lane will close permanently at some point in 2023, once work to create a cycle and walking route from the station to the start of the closed Crow Lane section has taken place.
