Chesterfield Proposed Cycle Network

Chesterfield cyclists Over the course of 2009/2010 Derbyshire County Council, Chesterfield Borough Council, Chesterfield Cycle Campaign and Sustrans worked together to develop a strategic cycle network for Chesterfield.

The project started by identifying useful 'destinations' in Chesterfield such as shopping areas, hospitals, schools, the train and bus station, Market Square, main residential areas etc. These 'destinations' then became known as 'cycle hubs' and were connected by desire lines creating the Chesterfield Cycle Network Schematic, based on the London Underground' concept, which is available to download from the related documents section below.

Following production and agreement of the Schematic, audits were conducted by a team of representatives from Derbyshire County Council Highway Engineering and Design, Sustainable Travel, Countryside and Transport Policy, Chesterfield Borough Council Planning department, Chesterfield Cycle Campaign and Sustrans. The team then cycled along the strategic routes, identified desired/missing links and estimated the level of works that would be required in order to deliver the link.

In total, ten strategic routes were identified and detailed maps of these routes are available to download from the related documents section of this webpage. Due to the size of the proposed cycling network, it has been divided into seven sections, which can be identified in the 'Map Guide' below. This also includes a map key. It should be noted that the maps represent proposed routes only and that full consultation will be conducted as individual sections are progressed. As such, the alignment of some routes may be subject to change as a result of consultation, further discussion and investigation. A log of any alterations made to the maps is available to download from the related documents section below.

It is important to stress that this is a considerable project which will take many years to complete and is dependent on resources, available funding and also land-use re-development. Therefore the production of these strategic network maps marks the start of a long-term project but does aim to ensure that links are delivered as and when the opportunity arises in a consistent manner in order to deliver a complete cycle network.
