Traffic lights
Permanent traffic signals and pedestrian crossings are placed on the county's roads to help with traffic management, to reduce road accidents and reduce the hazards that face all road users.
We are responsible for the design, installation and maintenance of traffic signals, pedestrian and cycle crossings.
The types in current use are listed on the left.
To report a fault on a existing pedestrian crossing or permanent traffic signal excluding Zebra's and Refuges
Permanent signals are inspected on a regular basis, but should you observe a fault, you may report it to us by calling 01629 538625. Outside normal office hours, your call will be taken by an answerphone.
Statutory undertakers such as Severn Trent Water, Central Networks and Transco often carry out work on the roads across Derbyshire and install temporary traffic lights to manage the flow of traffic whilst they do so
Should you wish to report a fault with temporary signals, please telephone Call Derbyshire on 08 456 058 058.
We also maintain a number of traffic signals which are located on the Trunk Road network on behalf of the Highways Agency (opens in a new window).
To report a fault on a Zebra Crossing or Pedestrian Refuge
Any lighting faults at Zebra Crossings or at Pedestrian Refuges can be reported by contacting:
Call Derbyshire on 08 456 058 058
or fill in our online fault reporting form
If you have your enquiry number, issued by the online fault reporting system, you can track progress on our online tracking form.
Requesting a new pedestrian crossing or traffic signals
We are pro-active in identifying safe places for pedestrians to cross the road and locations for traffic signals to improve traffic management, however it also receives many requests each year for new crossings.
These sites are surveyed and the results compared with national criteria to identify the locations which would benefit most from the installation of signals or a crossing. It must be pointed out that not all sites are suitable. The factors measured are the number of people crossing the road, the amount of traffic, the safety record on the road near to the site and local features such as hospitals, schools and shops.
The worst sites receive priority attention subject to funding being available.
