Road Humps

Derbyshire County Council considers requests for road humps where there is a need to reduce accidents, reduce speed and to improve safety of residential roads. Many of these requests originate from members of the public.

As well as concerns about individual roads, we receive requests for traffic calming in residential areas and around schools.  Their construction and signing is regulated by the Government's Department for Transport.

Road humps can only be installed on roads with a speed limit of 30mph or less, and where street lighting is present.

The regulations also state that road humps are to:

  • be between 25mm and 100mm high

  • have a minimum length of 900mm

  • be either curved or flat topped, and

  • be spaced at between 20m and 150m.

All schemes are subject to local consultation. For more information please contact Call Derbyshire on 08456 058 058.
