Adopted roads (highways)

We are required to keep an up to date list of streets maintained at public expense under Section 36 Highways Act 1980. This list includes adopted highways which are held in linear format.

Adopted highways are usually but not exclusively, roads, footpaths and footways that are surfaced, together with some grass verges.

They become adopted through legislation either historically or more recently through legal agreement, following which they are maintainable at public expense by the Highways Authority or Highways Agency.

We are the Highway Authority for Derbyshire, (excluding trunk roads, motorways and the City of Derby). The Highways Agency is responsible for motorways and trunk roads.

Information relating to the adoption status of roads within Derbyshire with the exception of Derby City Council can be viewed by using the link below to the Derbyshire Mapping portal.

Disclaimer

Information displayed is being constantly up dated and is correct to the best of our knowledge. It does not constitute a definitive statement as to the status of any particular highway. It provides information as to whether a way is adopted highway maintainable at public expense. It does not give details of the lateral extent of adoption, for example whether a grass verge is part of the adopted highway.
