School Travel Plans

A school travel plan (STP) is a document setting out a package of measures to reduce the number of car trips made to schools by pupils, parents and staff.

School travel plans are not only about transport, they are also about improving health and benefiting the environment and the local community.

A joint Department for Children, Schools and Families (previously known as the Department for Education and Skills) and Department for Transport (DfT) policy aims for all schools to have a travel plan in place by 2010. In the case of schools wishing to expand or relocate, it will usually be a condition for planning permission that the school has a school travel plan.

We have produced ‘a guide to school travel plans’ to help schools develop their travel plan, as well as providing practical help via the school travel plan co-ordinators.

Detailed information for school managers on School Travel Planning can be also be found in the related links section.

Additional capital grants (typically of around £5,000 for primary schools and £10,000 for secondary schools) are also available to schools with travel plans. Plans need to meet essential criteria to be eligible for this grant. Details can be found by using the related links.

The Government has asked us to prepare a Sustainable Modes of Travel Strategy to explain how we intend to encourage children and their parents to make less use of the car for journeys to and from school. Instead of using the car we would like to encourage children to walk, cycle or take the bus. For more information visit www.derbyshire.gov.uk/sustainable-schooltravel (opens in a new window)
