Cycle safely
It is important to keep safe when cycling on roads. Here are some essential safety tips.
Make sure you can be seen. Ride clear of the kerb, wear bright clothing and always use lights after dark or in poor weather conditions.
Wear a cycle helmet.
Show drivers what you plan to do. Always look and signal before you start, stop or turn.
Ride a straight line past parked cars rather than dodging between them.
Remember that you have to obey traffic lights and signs, just like other traffic!
Pavements are for people unless it is clearly marked as a cycle path - and always give pedestrians plenty of room.
Know your crossings! The only type of crossing you can ride across the road on is a 'toucan' - you can easily tell these by the 'green bike' light'.
