b_line for young people

Young people living in Derbyshire can take advantage of the b_line (opens in a new window) scheme, which gives discounts on travel and a range of other money-off deals.

If you're 14 to 18 years old, and in full-time education, you can have a b_line² card giving you reduced-fare travel and all the other b_line discounts.

If you're 11 to 13 years old, you can have a b_line¹ discount card − you don't need a card to get reduced-fare travel, but you can use it to prove your age in case you're asked for full fare.

For advice on concessions for young people, please call us on 01629 580000 and ask for extension 7064. Leaflets giving more information about b_line are available from local libraries.

Do I qualify?

To get a b_line¹ card you need to be:

11, 12 or 13 years old and in year 7 or above and living in Derbyshire (including Derby City).

To get a b_line² card you need to be:

14, 15 or 16 years old (or 17 or 18 years old and still in full-time education) and living in Derbyshire (including Derby City).

How much does it cost?

Your first b_line¹ and b_line² cards are completely free − and there's no charge for replacements when they expire. But if you lose or damage your card you'll have to pay a £5 replacement charge.

What concessions are available?

With a b_line² card you can travel on any bus or train service included in the scheme for two-thirds of the normal adult fare, and can buy day returns and most other discounted tickets at reduced rates too.

If you're under 14 you don't need a card to travel at reduced fare, but you can have a b_line¹ card which you can use to prove your age in case you're asked for full fare.

What restrictions are there?

Very few.

Your b_line card is valid every day of the week, at any time of day.

There is, though, a limit on how far you can travel outside the county.

Where can I travel?

With a b_line card, you can travel on normal scheduled bus and train services (but not long distance express services, excursions and tours, or certain special trains) between any two points in Derbyshire.

You can also use bus services going outside the county, provided that you start or finish your journey in Derbyshire and do not change buses.

On train services, you can travel outside the county to Sheffield, Nottingham, Burton, Uttoxeter and Manchester (and to intermediate stations on these lines) as long as one end of your journey is in Derbyshire. View the travel map to see where you can go.

Where to apply for your card

If you attend a Derbyshire County Council school, a Derby City Council school, or a college or university in Derbyshire, you will probably be issued with your b_line card by your school or college, without having to complete an application form.

But if you 're eligible for a card and you don't get yours this way, you can apply for one − find out how, and download an application form if you need one (opens in a new window).

What to do about a lost or damaged card

If you lose or damage your card, you will have to apply for a new one, at the place which issued your first one. There is a charge of £5.00 for a replacement card.

You will have to pay full fare for any journey you make while you cannot show your card.

If your card is damaged or defaced, it can be withdrawn by a transport operator, and you will be charged full fare.
