Transport & roads
It has a fleet of nine tail-lift mini-buses, which are very heavily booked for most of the time. Dial-a-Bus and Dial-a-Ride services are offered.
Dial-a-Bus
The Dial-a-Bus Service can be best described as a door to town shopping service for people who are unable to use ordinary public transport.
The service runs to the city centre twice a week from twenty areas of the city as well as once a week from five surrounding districts (Aston/Weston/Shardlow and Etwall). A service to two local superstores (Kingsway and Spondon) is now also included for city based areas.
The cost for the city based services is a flat fare of 60p return per passenger for all journeys. In the districts the fare is 90p return. All of the fares receive a public transport subsidy from the County and City Councils. People who use wheelchairs can be easily accommodated and helpers can also be provided to anyone who feels that they need one, or alternatively you can bring your own escort on the bus.
Dial-a-Ride
This is the flexible complement to Dial-a-Bus. Whereas Dial-a-Bus only has a single destination, Dial-a-Ride can be used to take a passenger to any point in the city. It is used by people for visiting friends, relatives, pubs, doctors, libraries etc. This service is available every day of the year. At the time of writing the service costs about the same as a commercial taxi, but it is hoped to reduce the fares to a much more acceptable level through some form of subsidy.
