Extended services in and around schools
Derbyshire is pioneering innovative approaches to the government's extended schools programme. A series of initiatives are taking place around the county to test different ways of delivering extended services according to local needs. The Government requires all schools by 2010 to provide access to extended services according to the nationally recommended core offer of:
- quality child care from 8am to 6pm all year round for all under 14 year olds who want it
- a varied menu of activities - including study support
- parenting support
- swift and easy referral to specialised support services
- wider community access to school based facilities.
We are developing a strategy which refers to "extended services in and around schools" rather than just extended schools. This reflects:
- the important role that partner agencies have in providing services
- that whilst services may be accessible via schools they may be provided on other sites
- that close links will be established to services developed in Children's Centres and as part of Youth Matters.
A roll-out programme of events is currently being facilitated by us and has so far been offered to schools and partners in 11 local clusters. Visit our Forthcoming Events (opens in a new window) page for details of events in 2007-08.
This programme supports clusters of local schools and their partners in collaborating, auditing and planning the implementation of extended services in and around schools. The programme has been very positively received by participants.
Deputy Assistant Director, Chris Tilley, who leads the Extended Services in and around Schools event programme said
"The principle of 'Extended Services in and around Schools' has been widely welcomed by Derbyshire school leaders and local statutory and voluntary children's services partners. Schools and partners involved in the pilot projects and events are making good progress in engaging with communities to identify need against the core offer and working with the Local Authority and partners to plan to meet those needs".
