Health protection

One of the key roles of public health is to protect the health of the population.

Health protection focuses on the risks from:

  • infectious diseases
  • environmental health hazards such as chemicals and radiation.

Health protection also includes responses to any emergency situation that involves health such as a major road traffic accident or major flooding.

Our health protection team works with relevant local organisations to ensure plans are in place to protect Derbyshire residents against threats and hazards to health. This includes making sure that there are tried and tested systems in place to identify and deal with any danger to public health. This can include management of infectious diseases such as flu or measles outbreaks, and systems to prevent and control infections and environmental hazards.

Our health protection team is responsible for making sure that the health of the population of Derbyshire is protected by:

  • ensuring all partner organisations have effective health protection plans and arrangements in place
  • receiving information about all local health protection issues and taking any necessary action in partnership with Public Health England and the NHS
  • contributing to the work of the local health resilience partnership
  • providing public health input into our emergency plans.

Public health incidents

Public Health England leads any initial response to public health incidents at a local level. This is done with support from our Director of Public Health and our health protection team.

If you would need to report a health protection issue contact the Public Health England Centre for the East Midlands, tel: 0344 225 4524 or visit Public Health England (opens in a new window).
