Short stays, short term care and respite care

Short breaks, respite or short term care is for people who require assistance with personal care because of disability, frailty, mental ill health or who are recovering from a period of ill health or family difficulty.

Short term care can also give carers, who provide a substantial amount of support to a cared for person, the chance to take a break (opens in a new window).

Respite or short term care is usually provided within a residential or nursing home. However, it can also be provided as part of the Shared Lives scheme or as short term, emergency home-based respite.

Accessing short term care services

Short term and respite care is available in a wide range of local authority, private and voluntary homes across the county. Our care service directory and current vacancies pages have details of services in Derbyshire providing respite and short term care.

If you don't already receive services from us, the first point of contact would be Call Derbyshire tel: 01629 533190 who will carry out a telephone assessment of your care needs. If you do already receive services then you should speak to your adult care worker.

If after a telephone assessment it is decided you are likely to be eligible for short term care, a visit from an adult care worker would be arranged to carry out a face-to-face assessment of your eligibility for short break or respite services.

Your adult care worker, and if necessary a representative from health would discuss with you whether you need a nursing home, a residential home, home based respite or our Shared Lives scheme. The range of options would be fully discussed with you and your carer as well as the length and frequency of your stay.

There are services in all areas of Derbyshire and we'll discuss your preferences with you, so that you do not have to travel any further than necessary to access respite care.

There are also specialist services for people who have specific needs such as a learning disability, dementia or physical disability. Your needs will be discussed during your assessment.

Paying for short term care services

There are charges for short term care services and how much you pay will be subject to a financial assessment.

If you own your own home this will not be taken into account when assessing how much you will need to contribute towards the cost of a respite stay. Further information about paying for short term care is available.
