Choosing a care home
Choosing a care home can be a daunting prospect.
When choosing a care home, it is important to make sure that the fees are affordable, not only immediately, but also over the long term. The consequences of perhaps having to move to alternative accommodation because of inadequate financial planning could be extremely distressing.
If you are considering applying for a care home and care home funding in Derbyshire but do not live here at present, you will have to contact your local council in the first instance.
All registered residential care homes are regulated by the Care Quality Commission (opens in a new window) so if you are looking for a home yourself, visit their website where you'll find general information, star ratings and copies of inspection reports.
We compile a list called a Care Homes Directory which is useful for people considering moving to a care home in Derbyshire. This directory lists both local authority and privately owned care homes.
We also have a page on the website where you can check whether the care home you are looking at has spaces available. This is called the available beds system (opens in a new window).

There are three different types of care homes which are briefly described here.
Residential care homes
These are homes of any size which provide residential accommodation and personal care.
Care homes providing nursing care
These provide care for individuals needing the constant involvement of, or supervision by, a qualified nurse. The person in charge of a nursing home has to be a registered nurse or doctor. The nursing home has to be staffed 24 hours a day by trained nurses.
Care homes providing specialist facilities
Some homes are registered to provide specialist services to people with learning disabilities, mental ill health or for younger disabled people.
