Parents urged to belt up for safety's sake

30 June 2009

Parents are urged to park up at supermarkets across the county in July to get their child car seats checked by experts.

Derbyshire County Council road safety officers and a car seat fitting expert will be on hand to offer safety advice and information at a variety of locations.

Motorists will be offered free checks to make sure their child’s car seats are fitted correctly and appropriate for the child’s age and height and the make and model of the car.

Checks will be between 10am and 4pm and will be carried out at:

  • Monday 27 July - Morrisons, Buxton
  • Wednesday 29 July – Sainsbury’s, Swadlincote
  • Friday 31 July – Sainsbury’s, Matlock

Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport Chris Jackson said: “It’s crucial that drivers understand the law about car seat safety not just for younger children but for youngsters up to the age of 12.

“It’s vital that children are belted-up safely in the car. Checks take only a few minutes but those few minutes could save your child’s life.”

For more information on child car safety seats and the law ring Call Derbyshire on 08456 058 058 or visit Derbyshire County Council’s website at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/roadsafety

This year the car seat checks are jointly funded by Derbyshire County Council and the Derby and Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership.
