Celebration of dance and diversity at Shipley

24 June 2009

There will be a lively celebration of music, dance and diversity taking place at Shipley Country Park in July.

Derbyshire County Council is working in partnership with Amber Valley Borough Council and Fleet Art's Turn it Up Youth music project to host the Emerge Festival.

This free festival showcases local talent and celebrates music, dance and diversity from around the globe.

There will be young bands and musicians playing on a mobile stage and an acoustic tent will provide a venue for live, unplugged acts such as Cocos Lovers.

There will be an international flavour with African dancing and drumming by Tongessai and dance troupe Mpopoma, Brazilian martial arts dancing from Capoiera and traditional Chinese music by Ling Peng.

There will also be displays of street dancing, belly dancing, storytelling by Pete Chand, children’s creative activities, a mobile skate park, climbing wall, craft stalls and much more.

Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport Chris Jackson said: “This is a great opportunity for people to come along and see a wide variety of different cultural influences and music.

“It also showcases the huge amount of local, young talent that exists in Derbyshire.

“We hope that plenty of people will turn up to support this event, set in the wonderful countryside of Shipley Country Park.”

The Emerge Festival takes place at Shipley Country Park on Sunday 12 July between 1pm and 5pm.
