Young film makers get serious about dangers of drink

19 May 2008

Aspiring young movie makers are getting to grips with serious issues and putting the dangers of underage drinking across to their peers.

Derbyshire County Council is working in partnership with EM Media and the Confetti Institute of Creative Technologies to co-ordinate an innovative film making project.

The Cine Hub project, taking place in seven schools across Derbyshire, lets young people get involved in film production with a social message.

Each group are producing at least two films; a short five minute film and a longer, specially commissioned piece.

Five of the schools, each funded £1400 by Derbyshire County Council, are working with Derbyshire trading standards to create Consequences, a film about underage sales.

The five schools involved in the trading standards film project are:

  • Holbrook Centre for Autism

  • Wilsthorpe School Long Eaton

  • Bolsover School,

  • Friesland School Sandiacre

  • William Allitt, Swadlincote

They are creating short films that highlight the dangers of underage drinking and remind young people of the consequences of misusing alcohol and other age-restricted products such as tobacco, fireworks and solvents.

The final films will be shown to young people around the county as well as forming part of a regional trading standards consumer campaign

The films will be premiered at the Ritz Cinema in Belper on July 2.

Derbyshire County Council’s cabinet member for community safety Clive Moesby said: “Young people have a great opportunity to take advantage of professional equipment and advice to creative informative films to educate others.

“Often young people can be more receptive to their peers than to any other group and this is a wonderful way of spreading a serious message in a creative and fun way.”
