School makeover hits a high note
12 May 2008
Pupils at Bolsover Infant and Nursery School look set to have even brighter futures with the official opening of a new £635,000 foundation unit.
The unit, dedicated to the memory of former chair of governors Colin Elwell, replaces three buildings at the Welbeck Road site with:
a new nursery building
a double classroom block
a fenced play area.
Work began on the project in April 2006 and was completed last year. The school then began improving outdoor play areas with cash they made through fund-raising activities, and a £9,400 childcare sustainability grant approved by the authority.
Councillor Joyce Sanders, chair of Derbyshire County Council, performed the official opening and celebrated with Councillor Alan Charles, cabinet member for schools, pupils and staff.
A commemorative stone in honour of Mr Elwell is at the entrance to the new unit.
Headteacher Christine Holmes-Elener said: “Colin was already a well-established governor when I became headteacher 12 years ago and he worked incredibly hard for the good of the school and our pupils.
“The school management team and governing body continue to have a shared vision for the present and future needs of the school.
“The new foundation stage building will help us to make even more positive changes and naming the unit after Colin is a fitting tribute to his commitment.
“We’re all very proud of this achievement and the opportunities these new facilities will bring to the school.”
Councillor Alan Charles said: “This new unit is purpose-built for modern teaching needs and offers pupils and staff the best learning environment.
“In partnership with the Government we’re continually making improvements to Derbyshire schools to help all children achieve their potential and enjoy their school life.”
A HIGH NOTE: The official opening is celebrated by (from left) Councillor Alan Charles, Derbyshire County Council’s cabinet member for schools, Councillor Joyce Sanders, Adam Blakeley, five, and Maisie Wilson, five.
