Bolsover library reopens

The transformation of Bolsover Library into a bright new space was marked by a specially-commissioned poem written by Derbyshire’s poet laureate.

River Wolton’s epic verse relates the town’s long and illustrious history and was recited by members of Bolsover Drama Group to mark the Church Street library’s £180,000 refurbishment.

It was well received by visitors who attended the Derbyshire County Council library’s official reopening on Thursday (May 15).

Derbyshire County Council’s cabinet member for cultural services, Councillor Bob Janes, declared the new-look library officially open. He said: “The library has a fantastic new look and is light and airy.

“We’ve evened up the floor and put in new lighting, a new ceiling and furniture as well as redecorated throughout.

“It looks a lot better and feels more spacious and we’ve had lots of positive comments about the changes.”

Other changes include adding a lift, disabled toilet and new carpeting. The entrance and access has been improved and the children’s area moved to a more central position.

There’s also lots of new stock and better shelving for books, books on tape, CDs, DVDs and computer games.

Comments in the library’s visitor book testify to the popularity of the improvements. They include:

“What a gem of a place.”

“A vast improvement.”

“Great layout. Disabled lift is a brilliant idea. Fantastic.”
