Moorland adventure for Shirebrook youngsters

09 May 2008

Getting to grips with traditional skills, enjoying the beauty of the moors and even doing a spot of video editing.

Young people will experience this and more during a residential visit to Cromford this month.

Derbyshire County Council’s youth service is taking 12 young people from Shirebrook on a visit to Cromford Venture Centre.

During the three day visit the young people will be out on the moors getting hands on with the traditional skill of dry stone walling.

The young people wanted to gain practical skills that would be beneficial to them in the world of work.

They will also learn about communication skills and dealing with the general public.

They plan to record their experiences throughout the residential and put together a video that they will film and edit themselves.

Derbyshire County Council’s cabinet member for cultural services Bob Janes said: “This is an ideal opportunity for the young people involved to get hands on and learn a practical trade.

“They will learn about safe working practices as well as interacting with each other and building on communication and team work.

“We are keen to promote learning opportunities for all young people in Derbyshire and activities like this help do this.”

The residential runs from May 23 to May 25 and forms part of the Youthtrain award which is an informal learning project.

It rewards young people for the skills and knowledge they gain through involvement in Derbyshire County Council run youth service projects and clubs in the community.
