Local people think green during compost week

Going Green: Friends Dawson Longdon and Janet Sanders with Councillor Brian Lucas

The composting message was brought to local people by Derbyshire County Council at a series of events to mark compost awareness week.

Derbyshire County Council’s cabinet member for environmental services, councillor Brian Lucas, said: “It’s easy to compost and you can turn more than a third of your rubbish into compost for your garden. You can compost grass cuttings, veg peelings, fruit scraps and hedge clippings.  You can also add shredded cardboard and paper.”

“It’s important that we all try and reduce the amount of rubbish we send to landfill. Using a compost bin really makes a big difference to the amount of rubbish produced."

Compost produced at home can be used for a variety of purposes in the garden, for use on flower beds, for enriching borders or for feeding a lawn.

Compost bins can be ordered at a discounted price of £17 by phoning 0845 077 0757 or by visiting www.recyclenow.com/homecomposting (opens in a new window). The price includes delivery.
