Eric celebrates with the children

Interactive whiteboards have replaced chalkboards, calculators have taken the place of the humble abacus and the inkwell was retired long ago.

And Eric Highton has witnessed all of these changes in education – and much more – during his remarkable 62 years of service as a governor at Ashbrook Junior School.

Eric, 83, joined the governing body of the school in 1946 and has devoted himself to supporting the work of pupils and staff there since.

His commitment has been celebrated at a ceremony where Councillor Alan Charles, Derbyshire County Council’s cabinet member for schools, presented Eric with a long-service certificate.

The former Rolls Royce worker has been instrumental in progress the school has made, including the move from the former site in Old Derby Road to its current location in Victoria Avenue, Borrowash.

He said: “The celebration was an absolute surprise and it was wonderful.

“I have always been interested in helping children and was involved with a youth club when I was a lad.

“It’s been wonderful to see generations of pupils grow up and progress and make the most of the wonderful opportunities that life has to offer.

“Borrowash was a small village when I first became a governor and it was important to play a part in the community and work together.

“Since the school moved to the new building in the 1950s there have been wonderful advances in technology which all help the children have a happy time while they’re learning.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all my years as a governor and it is so rewarding to see the children doing well and enjoying their schooldays.”

Councillor Alan Charles, Derbyshire County Council’s cabinet member for schools, said: “Eric’s commitment is outstanding and I cannot praise him highly enough for the support he has shown the school.

“We have more than 5000 governors across Derbyshire and their contribution helps schools to maintain high standards and give children the best opportunities.

"I want to thank Eric for his decades of service and praise his tremendous effort which has helped the school go from strength to strength.”

Headteacher Jenny Jaszczuk, said: “Eric is a lovely man who has a genuine interest in the children’s welfare and he works incredibly hard for the good of the school and the local community.

“We’re proud to have him on our governing body and everyone at the school is grateful to him for his contribution.”
